The Mind-Body Connection

Hello everyone!
I would rate my physical wellbeing at a 7. This area for me is the area I have to work on the most. I eat somewhat healthy but I don’t always exercise like I should. This is one of the main areas I hope to improve with this class. I would like to improve this area by doing more cardio exercises and taking the time out of my day to plan for exercising. I would rate my spiritual wellbeing at a 10. This area for my is the area that I dedicate the most time to. When I get in touch with my spiritual side I feel better as a being inside and outside.  A lot of people tend to forget this area or not pay any attention at all to this area. I think it is so important to find your spiritually on the road to human flourishing. One way I like to get in touch with my spiritual side is to go to church. I would be lying if I said I go to church every week. I know life happens and I can’t always make it to church, so I like to incorporate spiritually in my physical actives like including prayer in my mediation exercises, hiking or doing yoga.  I would like to improve this area by volunteering at my church’s food drive. When I do work for my church it I feel closer to my spiritual side. I would rate my psychological wellbeing at a 8. I always try to keep my brain training for the Olympian mental fitness. I also like to take 5 min out of my day to relax and regroup my mind, which includes being silent and turning off all thoughts. This keeps me from not going crazy. To improve this area I will make an effort to write down my thoughts and feeling and that will help me cope with things that are difficult for me in life. The exercise the week reminded my of yoga I take a mediation yoga class often and these are the type of exercises we do in class. One way I like to improve myself is by saying positive affirmations. I love how this exercise incorporated positive energy affirmations.

  1. Hey Leena!
I think I'd rate myself around a 7 physically as well. I am basically on the same page as you where I eat a fairly healthy diet but don't always exercise like I should. I'm hoping through all of my wellness and nutrition classes to get some help in these areas! I would definitely benefit by doing the same as you and making sure to add some form of cardio into my day. It's so easy to make time for something random, like going shopping or out to dinner, but so much more difficult to devote some time to exercise. I don't know if this would work for you, but a little while back I joined a 24-hour gym so that I could not make excuses about not having time to go because they'd always be there whenever I did have a second! It ended up working out best for me to go late at night (because I am a server and usually have the most energy later in the day than most people with regular 9-5 jobs). I don't know how your schedule is, but having access to a 24-hour gym was definitely helpful for me. Do you think that would help you try to fit it in your schedule easier?

    1. Yes I do. A part of of my reasoning for not making time to go to the gym is I sometimes like to work out at odd hours of the day. I like to workout really early in the morning or really late at night. It just depends on my schedule of that week. Keep in touch and let me know how it works for you.
      Good luck to you

  2. Hi Leena, that's awesome that you take time to strengthen your spirit. I wish more people increased their awareness of how we are spirit beings and without feeding our spirit man we are not really alive. Don't beat yourself up for not attending a church service each week. My work schedule on weekends has kept me from getting involved physically at my church for years, but I don't let it keep me from the numerous biblical/leadership resources available to me via the internet and television. If someone wants to grow spiritually bad enough they will make the time. I've been sharing about the inner and outer life and spirit, mind, body connection all week with people and it has me all fired up!! Taking 5 minutes to let your brain relax and recharge sounds like a great idea. I struggle with this one because my mind is always going. I'm very cerebral you could say. I've also found that through writing in these holistic courses I'm in right now it is very therapeutic to get my thoughts out for mental clarity and emotional health! Your comment on affirmations reminded me of a great cd my dad gave me long time ago. It's amazing how little things can make such an impact in your frame of mind in a span of minutes. I could help you accomplish your goal of improved exercise habit since I have a Kinesiology background. Which type of yoga do you do? I've only experienced Namaste. I'm a big fan of various forms of loosening the body's muscles, connective tissue, and limbs. When I have a few moments I like to increase energy by stretching on my stability ball, foam rolling my entire spinal column, and doing a few pullups in my room while listening to a biblical message or playing Christian rock music.

  3. Gabriel,
I'm glad you use positive affirmations. That is what helps me get though my day.I do a lot of mental yoga. When I do yoga it is more of a mind exercise for me then a physical exercise. I do yin, mediation, qigong, and restorative yoga. At my yoga stdio we have muscle therapy yoga. It focuses on getting your body to relax. You do stuff like messages and loosening your muscles. You might want to look into it. I hope this helps.
    Take care,
    Leena
